Successful house and pet sitters agree choice of house sitting website can be a game changer! But if you don’t know the qualities to look for, how can you select a good house sitting website from the others?
As one of the worlds longest serving full-time house sitters, over the past nine years we’ve joined every house sitting website on the planet to connect with more than 300 home owners. From this extensive experience we’ve identified the 5 qualities that distinguish a good house sitting website from the others.
1. Consistently list more House Sitting Jobs. Or will you join a platform that attracts very few legitimate house sitting jobs? Worse still – a dormant site?
Since 2013 Compare House Sitting® has been monitoring house sitting jobs on all prominent house sitting websites. From this research we know the sites that consistently list a good selection of house sitting jobs every month. We also know which platforms attract very few listings, and those that don’t get any at all.
2.Removes house sitting jobs once house sitter/s found. Or does the website allow home owner listings to remain ‘active’ for months after the house sitting assignment has been filled?
Not only does this practice artificially inflate the site’s listings, it is unhelpful for house sitters wanting to apply for ‘active’ house sitting jobs. Some sites indicate old listings by “Inactive” or “Completed”. Others show old listing as greyed out. Either way, for newcomers to the world of house and pet sitting who are learning how-to navigate platforms, those sites that show inactive house sitting jobs is confusing and a time waster.
3.Allows non-members to view ALL house sitting jobs. Would you pay for something without knowing exactly what it offers?
Some house sitting websites restrict potential house and pet sitters from viewing all house sitting jobs. These sites allow non-members to see a selection of listings, but full viewing access is restricted pending payment of the Joining Fee and/or registration of an email address.
4.Maintains a fair ratio of registered House Sitters to Home Owners. Will House Sitters compete with dozens of sitters for house sitting jobs? And will Home Owners be inundated with more applications than they can manage?
Anecdotal evidence suggests house sitting websites that charge both house sitters and home owners have a higher ratio of house sitters to home owners. This increases competition among house sitters considerably. Most home owners only search for house sitter(s) a few times each year. Many home owners question the need to pay to connect with house sitters when country specific house sitting sites have been around for decades that allow home owners to register and connect, for free.
5.Have an active Social Media presence. Or will you join a platform that neither shows its face or give members opportunity to interact with one another?
Social media plays an important role in the creation of trust and ongoing education. Social media enables administrators of websites to engage with users and answer questions, and empowers people to share experiences and discuss ideas for the benefit of the community at large.
Yes you can connect with confidence!
